Shrub and Tree Care Tips

6/5/2017

Set your yard apart!

Nothing adds contour, punctuation and definition to a lawn like trees and shrubs. They can really make a statement! But, how do you know that you're doing everything you can to keep them in good shape year-round? In this article, we'll look at some of the widely-accepted yard practices that may actually be doing your greenery more harm than good as well as tips for keeping trees and shrubs growing healthy and consistently.

When it comes to pruning it's easy to understand why shaving off some time might be appealing at first. It can be tedious and requires a lot of precision and safety – especially for pruning at higher elevations. Electric shears might seem like they're the best, most efficient tool for the job. But, the damaging effects they have on foliage can mean more work in the long run.

Electric shears cut on one plane and
directly through leaves and stems. This can create an environment where shrubs will push their limbs further and further out in search of sunlight. While it might make a great sculpting tool if you're trying to carve out egg shapes or circus animals but if you peer inside, you will find a bunch of browning and dying limbs starving for oxygen. Instead, grab a pair of bypass hand pruners and a pole pruner for taller jobs. With these you can make more strategic cuts, allowing sunlight to get all the way through the plant instead of just hitting the outer facade of leaves. This will also help facilitate healthy regrowth of the plant and offer a more 3-D effect overall!

When it comes to taking care of the trees in your yard, one of the essential things to keep in mind is how to keep the limbs growing in a healthy manner. Pests, weather and other elements can damage individual branches. Cutting the branch off will facilitate new growth, but it must be done well. A great technique to research is the three-cut method. The three-cut method will help you to trim dead branches without stripping or splitting the bark past your cut mark.
